Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / Testing Required for a Bevel Weld that does not call out CJP

We have a project for a customer and are in a stalemate in regards to NDT a bevel weld that does not call out CJP or to backgouge.

On their supplied shop drawings, some bevel welds call out CJP but others do not call out CJP.  And we did not perform any NDT on the ones that did not call out CJP.

Is there anywhere that states one way or another that you have to test/not test a bevel weld if CJP is not called out?

What code are you welding to? In AWS 2.4 Standard Symbols for Welding, if a bevel weld symbol is shown with no dimensions, it's a full pen weld.

If the AISC requirements are invoked, in the AISC Manual, Section N, 5b, CJP Groove Weld NDT states "For structures in risk category III or IV, UT shall be performed by QA on all CJP groove welds subject to transversely applied tension loading in butt, T- and corner joints, in material 5/16 in. thick or greater. For structures in risk category II, UT shall be performed by QA on 10% of CJP groove welds in butt, T- and corner joints subject to transversely applied tension loading, in materials 5/16 in. thick or greater." The user note states "For structures in risk category I, NDT of CJP groove welds is not required. For all structures in all risk categories, NDT of CJP groove welds in materials less than 5/16 in. thick is not required."

Any NDT requirements should be found in the project specifications.

It is AWS D1.1.  And the project spec just says to test applicable welds but does not state which ones.  Many of the welds are less than 5/16" also.  And the drawings were provided by our customer.

The minimum test method is visual of every weld per D1.1. Additional NDT has to be specified by the Engineer based on the loading conditions of the connections. Only welds subject to cyclic loads in tensions require volumetric examination.
