I have a client that wants to use 316 stainless to a mild steel hinge for a gate. I am having trouble locating information regarding making this weld. What is the recommended process/electrode for this weld. As a heads up, I am unsure of the weld process the fabricator will use for this connection.

Any recommendations? Sorry if this is a repeat question, I couldn't find much information on the topic at hand pertaining to my conditions.

Type 309 is usually the filler metal used for welds joining carbon steel to austenitic steel.

Thanks Al,

I knew that 309 was typically used for 304 grade stainless, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a sufficient difference in metallurgy that would prevent a suitable weld from being made between the 316 grade and mild steel.

Umm, no; 308 filler metal is used to weld 304 stainless, not 309. And as Al said, 309 is typically what is used to weld carbon to stainless steel.
