Dear friends

Can any one advise which is the preferable welding process/ welding filler electrode I can use for welding P550 drill collar Material.

kindly advise also the precautions needs to be taken while welding.

I am giving the composition of this material below for reference.

P550     C max %    Mn %      Cr %    Mo min%  N min%  Ni min%
             0.06         20.5-21.6    18.3-20     0.5           0.6            1.4

Have you contacted the manufacturer regarding their recommendations for welding this material?

This appears to be a high strength, high hardness material that probably has weldability issues. The manufacturer could give you some guidance and recommendations regarding welding their material.

HI

Thanks for your response.

This is definitely difficult to weld material as you have mentioned.

The recommendation is E310 -16 electrode or Inconel 625 wire.

I have tried this but all mechanical test (tensile/impact) will pass except side bend test as per sec IX.

Do you have any suggestion to improve weld and pass the bend test.

Bend tests failed? Did you check the diameter of the bending mandrel based on the elongation properties or strength of the weld joint? It is doubtful the material will bend successfully if you bend it using a "standard" bend diameter typically used with a low carbon or typical structural steel.

I think D1.1 will want 1.25" radius on >90ksi material

I don't believe I would lean too heavily on D1.1 for this material. This is a Mn-Cr austenitic stainless with a tensile strength on the order of 150 ksi in the cold worked condition. The yield strength is on the order of 140 ksi.

We have used the standard bending mandrel 40mm thick that is 4t of side bend test specimen as per Sec IX requirement.

Sounds like a tight bend diameter for a material with such a high tensile strength and yield strength.

what is the service conditions of this weldment?  Post all parameters, service conditions, process parameters of the welding if you would like any kind of intelligible answer.
