Do low hydrogen electrodes like E309 need to be placed in an oven at 250 degrees F? I was told in AWS D1.6 that they do. If I was welding P1 to P8 can my minimum preheat be 50 degrees?

The preheat temperature must meet the requirements of the applicable code. If the governing standard says the preheat temperature must be the higher of the two preheat temperatures specified, then that's what you do. If the applicable standards says the SMAW electrode must be stored in a heated electrode oven at a specified temperature, that's what you do. Exceptions can be taken only if the Owner's Engineer is in agreement with the exception.
