- - By Tom Shaw Date 10-23-2019 14:04
Hello everyone,
My name is Tom Shaw and I am a welding student at Mitchell Technical Institute in Mitchell, SD. One of our assignments in out Code Book class is to ask a question on this forum.
My question is regarding the qualification test through D1.5. According to 5.21.5.2 “Root or intermediate weld bead contours shall not be modified by chipping, grinding. Cutting or other means before depositing subsequent weld passes”. However, it does not mention anything about the final cover pass when you are competed welding. My question is, can you use a grinder, power chipper, etc. after all welding is completed in order to remove excess reinforcement?
Other opinions on this subject would be great because I have received different answers from different people.
Thanks,
Tom Shaw

This is a really hard one to interpret because I have two CWI's that interpret this differently I understand both but would like to have someone else's opinion on this.

I am thinking that it is going to just be based on how the CWI interprets the code.

It's never about how the CWI "interprets" the code... Or it shouldn't be.

It's how the whole code reads>

5.21.5.1 Chipping and Brushing. Cleaning between
weld passes shall be limited to hand chipping and handwire
brushing. Power chippers or grinders shall not be
used during the weld test
. Upon weld test completion and
after visual inspection, the weld may be made flush by power
tools as necessary in order to facilitate testing (see 5.26.1.1

Here is commentary explaining why:

C-5.21.5.2 Root and Fill Pass Cleaning. Personnel
are not to be qualified if they cannot consistently make
welds of proper profile and free of unacceptable discontinuities.
Grinding and the other described actions would
allow the correction of poor profile and the repair or
removal of discontinuities in the test plate, allowing a
welder with poor or unacceptable technique to, perhaps,
pass the test.

Thank you this explains it a lot!
