We have been allowed to perform PQR's using a bug-o machine in the past by some third party inspectors. The question is, " Is this really mechanized welding" per AWS D1.5 2015? What makes it differ from single electrode SAW? My shop will be performing several PQR's in the near future for a project to be sold to California, ( it's stuff for a large golden bridge). Reference AWS D1.5 2015 Section 5.24.3.4.

This is exactly what your Bug-0 does.    It's also exactly what your single wire SAW does (unless it's hand held).   NOTE the asterisk

Snipped from D1.5 Annex D
"  *mechanized welding. Welding with equipment which
performs the welding operation under the constant observation
and control of a welding operator. The
equipment may or may not load and unload the workpieces.
See also automatic welding.  "

Thanks. That was basically my stance and argument.
