We are trying to set a welding procedure on SA-516-70 to SA-516-70 using GTAW root/hotpass and cap. The wire is ER-70S-6.
The plate was 5/8" the preheat was 150F. The innerpass was not allowed to reach above 500F. After welding was complete the test coupon was wrapped with K-wool until the following day.
The charpys are failing in HAZ and WM. What needs to be changed? Pre-heat temp, innerpass temp, amps, volts.

You did something wrong.

What was your heat input? Did you monitor each pass? You didn't recorded the parameters for each bead? Silly boy.

Hi, would like to know more about it.

You must limit your heat input to pass Charpies. For SMAW make sure your welder is limiting the width of his weld beads. Small beads and fast weld speeds will make your Charpies. Allow to cool down between layers.

"GTAW root/hotpass and cap". If you only welded three passes on a 5/8" plate, there is your problem. Need more info. Filler metal brand, welding parameters, by pass, What code are you working to, what are the impact requirements. Typically with GTAW you can swing a dead cat and get good CVN's. Need as much info as you can give. gmastsko, the poster says they are using the GTAW process.

Not all filler metals are created equal. Make sure you select one that has demonstrated it can meet CVN by looking at the applicable filler metal specification. Some filler metals are required to meet CVN when tested by the manufacturer, some do not.
