let me start by saying how helpful this forum is and how much I've learned and appreciate the responses I get using this forum, but I do have a new question is regards to welding angle, we have a weld joint where 1 angle butts up to the flat side of another angle letting us put 3 fillet welds around the angle and a butt weld on top, my question is the butt weld is required to have a flat contour(flat by grinding) and the weld joint does not have a bevel, is this type of joint fine because it has a 1/4" fillet weld on the back side of the butt joint or should there be a bevel for 100% CJP, I feel like im getting lost in D1.1 between CJP and PJP requirements, just needing some guidance here

id also like to add there is not a root opening at the butt joint as well.

Can you please provide a picture of what you’re describing?

Write a post....then post it.
After you post it, you will see several items in a row below your post...one of them is the word "attach", click on that and follow the directions to upload your picture (there is size limit). After it is uploaded, you can hit the arrow in the upper right corner to take you back to your post to view your post with the picture.

Contours: If the weld symbol shows a grind flush contour, then you need to grind flush
AWS A2.4:2012 clauses 7.6.2, 7.7.4.1, 7.7.4.2, 8.6.1, 9.7, 10.9 and a few more talk about contours.

Is this what you have? If so, I'm thinking that what you are calling a butt weld is a square groove weld. Fillet weld at 3 sides, square groove at the top.

exactly what it is

so I my question is, does that square groove weld have to be there at all, or does it need to have CJP?

Technically,  the square groove is a pjp if welded from one side, but is limited to 1/4" material thickness. I see this used all of the time for materials over 1/4" just because the intention was to have that seam welded. Is it 100% correct? Not really,  but what symbol do you use if you want the welder to weld it there?
