I am interested in learning how to determine the appropriate minimum preheat temperature to be used when welding on unlisted materials in accordance with AWS D1.5. We have an increasing number of customers who have specified welding be performed in accordance with AWS D1.5 using ASMT A572 gr 65 and other materials that are not specifically called out or shown in D1.5.

Has anyone had any experience in how to determine the appropriate preheats to be used in such a situation?

Consult the book. Clause 4.2 (D1.5-2015) would be a good starting point.
