I am trying to get a PQR/WPS made for 304 ss steel, my goal is to have the root and hot pass with GTAW, and the filler/cap with SMAW. Is it possible to weld a piece of plate 3/8" thick with backing, pass the PQR, but then make a seperate WPS for groove pipe? The code is ASME section ix and it lists backing as a non essential, but backing gas as an essential, but is it only essential for certain P numbers?

For those interested, the AISC has developed a standard (AISC 370) for stainless steel, the "Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings" which will cover the design, fabrication, and erection of austenitic and duplex structural stainless steels: sections made from annealed sheet, strip, and plate that have not been subsequently cold-formed or rolled; hollow structural sections; round and square bar, annealed and cold-finished; and hot-rolled or extruded shapes. It also applies to precipitation hardening stainless steel bar. They recently had it up for public review and comments, and at this point, it's a work in progress, but it appears to be coming soon.
