Hi Gents,

Could you advise, we have a 25mm (Vertical- T2) & 50mm (Horizontal-T1) "tee-joint" test coupon for Fillet Weld PQR .

How much should be our minimum leg length for this test coupon 19mm or???

(Code says: size of fillet weld (leg length) = T2 , not more than 19mm.)

"(Code says: size of fillet weld (leg length) = T2 , not more than 19mm.)"

If the code or drawing defines the minimum size, well then of course use that.
However, is the T2 portion of your statement a typo? Should it be T/2?
I find a general rule of thumb for fillet sizes to be useful in most cases, T/2 + 1 = Ideal fillet size.

A double fillet on A36 using E70 electrode; the optimum leg size is 3/4T if the goal is to match the base metal in both shear and tension if the allowable is 0.3 TS of the filler metal and  0.4 YS of the base metal in shear.

1/2 inch plate; optimum size equal to T/2 + 1 = 1 1/4-inch. That sound pretty big in my neck of the woods. Are you sure there isn't a typo buried in there somewhere?

Hi AL,

The original Poster was using metric dimensions, I believe for joining 25mm to 50mm plate.
Using the thickness of the thinner part joined, T/2 = 12.5mm +1 = 13.5 mm ideal fillet weld size.
With Imperial dimensions replace 1 with 1/16", so 1" / 2 = 1/2" + 1/16" = 9/16" ideal fillet weld size.

Not perfect in all cases, just a rule of thumb.

Hi Tim,

T1 is thickness of first Plate
T2 is thickness of second Plate

Please refer Figure 462.4 (a) of ASME IX

Wouldn't it be nice if the posters stated what the governing document is when they post the question and maybe just a little information on the application.

This guy is qualifying a fillet on plate per ASME Section IX. The figure says it all.

Use it same dimension as your project.
