FabTech was able to make a GRAND return this year in Chicago at McCormick Place on the shores of Lake Michigan. 

While not as well attended as in years past, considering the ongoing uncertainty and travel restrictions it was very encouraging to see the turnout that responded to the opportunity.  The AWS opening ceremonies were well attended and the new Officers and District Directors were presented.  We then got to meet the new inductees into the position of AWS Counsellor, a very great acknowledgement of ones contributions to the welding industry and service to AWS. 

There was also a new award, CWI Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Al Moore.  Al has been very active as a CWI Instructor at seminars, code committee work, District/Section activities, teacher of so many other classes and all around resource person. 

On Tuesday there was an awards ceremony with many being acknowledged for their work at many levels; Technical Papers, AWS volunteer work, and enough more to fill a book.  Among them was a Meritorious Sevice Award in recognition of good council, loyalty and devotion to the affairs of AWS, promotion of cordial relations with industry and other organizations, and for the contribution of time and effort on behalf of AWS presented to myself (Brent Boling) of AZ Section. 

While the show floor was not as packed with equipment as previously, it was well worth a walk around to see all the robotics and other new technologies coming forward during these difficult times. 

There were also committee meetings for several of the code committees that take this opportunity to do face time meetings and perform their assigned tasks of keeping codes updated. 

Overall, it was a great week.  I met lots of people, renewed friendships with many that were not able to travel over the past year plus, and saw some interesting sights in Chicago. 

FabTech is always an adventure worth the time, effort, and expense.  Next year: Atlanta, GA.  Keep it in mind and start planning.
