Hello everyone,

Concerning Intermittent staggered welds, It's understood that the welds start on the arrow side but I'm unclear as to what is acceptable to the placement of the first weld on the other side.  Effectively, can the weld start at the end of the arrow side weld? or does it need to be in-between the 2 welds (arrow side) evenly placed?

Aws explains the misconceptions but does not indicate the start of the weld on the opposite side.  using the photo showing the staggered welds, the first weld is placed on the rightmost side and has a length of 6" on the opposite side of the joint can the weld be started 6" from the right side? or must it be placed directly in the middle of the welds (like in the image) can the placement be like in the capture2 image?

I can't find any reference in the AWS D1.1:2020 code book that explains this

AWS doesn't take a position on where the welds start as long as the unwelded space doesn't exceed pitch minus increment length between the full siz portions of the weld increment. Also, there is no implied tolerances other than the weld size is the minimum, the increment length applies to the full size fillet, and the maximum unwelded space between full size increments is not more than pitch minus the increment length.

Good Day,

This is going to relate to the actual pitch.  Starts and stops on opposing sides will be different for different specified staggered welds. And there is no code specified point for where the start/stops occur.

Having said that, the engineer may include a detail that gives exactly that information if exact weld placement is important for the anticipated stresses and usage.  But with no detail, the objective is to keep the welds from being in exact opposition to each other.  How much they vary is not specified.

Have a Great Day,  Brent
