Up Topic Welding Industry / Technical Discussions / TIG to plasma cutter retrofit

One more question along the plasma cutter route. I've heard that TIG power supplies are very similar to plasma-cutter power supplies. And I'd tend to believe it...DCEN output, arc started by high frequency (that's what plasma cutters use for the pilot arc, right?).

It sure seems like there ought to be a way to retrofit a plasma cutting setup to an existing TIG welder. I've got an ESAB Heliarc 161 AC/DC, and 160 amps of juice ought to cut some pretty thick stuff, eh?

If you've ever run across a kit to convert TIG to PC, or know of some reason this simply couldn't be done, please post!

Thanks,
Dave
