I am trying to find out the root opening on a 6g test for D1.2 for aluminum. The pipe is 3" 1/4 wall I have read in code book and found in figure 3.29-tubular groove weld-performance qualification-without backing that the root opening is 1/16 in. max and the root face is 1/16 in. max. I have been told by another CWI that in the book that the root opening can be 1/8 in. I have yet to find were it says that can anyone help on what the proper root opening is.

In the joint details, does it give a plus or minus dimn for the fitup tolerance?

I haven't seen any thing related to the fit up with plus or minus it just says 1/16 in. max.

I don't have copy of D1.2 so I can't be of much help to you. I was shooting in the dark hoping to help.
D1.1 gives tolerances for detailing, fit-up, etc. which one can take the tolerance and still be within the procedure.

EVWELDER:
AWS D1.2:2003, Figure 3.29 denotes maximum root opening and root face dimensions. I would like to know where the additional 1/16" comes from. If he/she is applying the as fit-up tolerances from the recommended joint details, that is incorrect. All the V grooves in Figures B1 require backgouging. I know your not backgouging your 6G.

Max is max, is max, is max.
