I have recently welded some 3/16 thick plate as covering on a project I'm working on.The problem is there is some conection plates on the inside welded to the plate that has caused a wavy effect on the outside looking at a straight run of this stuff. I clamped down the plate when welding and put as little of weld as possible with a 3/32 5183 rod but still recieved disstortion. Any tips on making the plate flat again the pieces are going to be powder coated I would like to stay away from any kind of bondo if possible.

Thanks

On Welding Journal magazine (AWS' official magazine) of February, 2003, page 29, there's a comprehensive article on the subject.

Post offices are already closed for today. I'll mail the copy tomorrow (wednesday, december 17) morning. It'll take 4-6 days to reach you.
I don't want to scan it up and send it by electronic mail because there are several drawings in the article, and they loose quality when scanned.
