Under AWS D1.4-98 are there any prequalified wps's or must you qualify each procedure? Does the AWS have a standard weld procedure if so where can I find it.

If there is none is it correct to assume that one must do 2 tensile pulls and 2 macro etch's to qualify such a procedure?

If anyone has experience with this code AWS D1.4-98 Structural Welding Code-Reinforcing please advise.

We just went through this same situation. At least one PQR is needed, depending on the CE of the materials used (see section 6.2.1).

Table 6.2 in D1.4 is a bit confusing. The table says the minimum number of specimens tested shall be 2, but it goes on to require 2 tensile and 2 macro specimens. Go figure. To be safe we just did 4 specimens. We did the butt weld qualification and did 2 tensile and 2 macro specimens.

Another thing worth noting: The PQR must be done on the largest size rebar to be used in production. However, the welder performance test must be done on the smallest size to be used in production (paragraphs 6.2.1.1 and 6.3.2.2 in D1.4-98.

Good luck

Just a reminder......during the project, really keep your eye on the essential variables which require requalification.
