Does anyone know what the rule of eights refers to in the AWS D1.1 or D 1.4?

I've never heard of that before. What does the "rule of eights" apply to? weld design? size? qualifications?

On a Google search I did find some reference to electron shells of atoms. Could that be part of what you mean?

It was suggested that it may refer to Table 6.1 in D1.1 2002, which lists 8 criteria for visual inspection.
