For thin sections is a complete Argon atmosphere required to prevent the non-welded surfaces from oxidizing?

Hi Gordie,

I don't know if this helps in any way, but in Volume 4 of the Welding Handbook published by the AWS, "Metals and Their Weldability", all it says is that argon or helium is effective in preventing oxygen contamination of the molten weld pool during arc welding. It also has a table of physical properties, and briefly discusses different types of fusion welding processes such as GMAW, GTAW, OFW, and EBW. It also briefly discusses brazing, soldering, projection welding, and the difficulty of resistance welding.
