Does anyone have any experience with or advice for welding AISI 1009? It is a very old specification with .12 carbon, .27 manganese, .10 nickel, and .025 sulfur. I've been requested to weld it to itself, and to A36. I'm anticipating that using SMAW with E7018 will work, but I'm concerned about excessive porosity developing in such a low carbon material. The material is in service as part of a water works, and the welds need to be water tight.

I have no experience with AISI 1009.
If your concern is only porosity I would like to recommend for your welding as follows;
1) SMAW
You may choose E7018 electrode which has more maganese content or more deoxidizer such as Fe-Mn or Fe-Si in the flux.
2) FCAW
E71T-1 flux cored wire has good porosity resistance for shipbuilding purpose.
