Up Topic Welding Industry / General Welding Discussion / What gauge sheet metal to use?

I am modifying my son's go kart and I want to put some sheet metal on the sides to keep legs in the kart. Kids tend to want to stick their legs out when it is motion, hate to see them break a leg!
What gauge sheet metal would be appropriate?

I don't want to weigh the kart down too much but it would still need some rigidity.

Any opinions?

If this is a real racing kart, then sheet metal sides are out of the question as every kart sanctioning body doesn't allow sheet metal to be used as such.

A better solution is to use regular kart molded plastic side pods and fab up 5/8"-3/4" tube mount system. The molded side pods look good, are quite inexpensive and will do way more to protect your sons legs.

This is an off road kart, not racing. I have seen lots of off road karts with sheet metal, I just don't know how thick to go?

Here is a link to a handy chart that lists gage thickness and pounds per square foot. It might be handy if weight is a factor.
