Hi, I have a question for anyone out there who has had some experience with 1/2 - 1-ton truck frames (1/4"-3/8", mostly just 1/4" thick) I would like to weld in some crossmembers for additional rigidity and also box the frame on some of the older jeeps and pick-up trucks (still using 1/4" mild steel plate) I also plan on adding 1/4" mild steel suspension bracketry as well (spring hangers, link arms,etc.) Can anyone suggest a good CV Mig welder (I'm thinking about the Millermatic 185 or the Lincoln PowerMig 255) or at least some Mig parameters for optimum penetration and good looking welds (required amperage,wire size and feed rate) Also, any info on spray arc versus short circuit for my application would be greatly appreciated. ( What type of power source is needed to generate enough amperage for this? Is it even right for the thickness of the steel I will be using?) Thanks a lot.
