I received a submittal from a subcontractor for a welding procedure for welding ASTM A108 rail to itself. The procedure states the material is P-1, Group 2. Just for amusement I set out to prove that A108 is indeed P-1, Group 2. So far I've struck out, and so has the subcontractor when I called and asked them to prove it. The ASTM specification doesn't designate it as such and the AWS doesn't seem to identify A108. Maybe it used to but I can't find it now.

Does anyone know how to demonstrate that A108 is P-1, Group 2?

According to the current edition of ASME Section IX, 2001/2003 (the governing code on ASME P groups), A108 materials are listed as S-1, Group-1.

What this means is if a WPS is qualified for P-1 / Group-1 materials, you may use that WPS for S-1 / Group-1 materials (within the other essential variables limitations).

The A108 materials listed in Section IX are: 1015CW, 1018CW and 1020CW.
