I'm doing an overlay of Ni60 GMAW on A36 material. My question is, am I "required" to use Ni61 as my first layer?

Hi

Do you mean Monel 60? and Nickel 61? If you do, then you would not normally require a buttering layer of Ni61. Monel 60 will give a suitable first layer, as long as the dilution of the base metal into the filler does not exceed about 60%. (This is quite high. For overlays, the dilution is typically around 30 - 50%, depending on the process and parameters used. With some low dilution processes and parameters, dilutions as low as 10% can be achieved.)

Hope this helps.

Niekie, You are correct, Monel 60. I'm doing multiple layers to achieve
.312" overlay thickness which will be machined back to .187" thickness(NAVY job).Time was a problem as well as cost. At $20/ lb I need to use approx. 8 30 lb. rolls of 60. Thank you for your insight and I believe I will go with 60 alone.

Hi Wonderweld!
Not to put a damper on your party but, If the Ni 61 is a contract requirement and is specified then, the Navy (if it's the USN?) may not accept what you give them. Just a thought!
