Where I work, we repair casting defects, which can be anything, from though wall (CJP) repairs to dimensional buildup. All of our procedures are qualified with a butt joint, as the codes do not really address much else besides fillet welds, corrosion resistant overlay, or hardfacing overlay. (ASME IX anyway). Plus it is about the only way to get mechanical testing of the weld/base metal in normal test samples.
