When welding thin materials (for example Unistrut ~1/16" thick) to thick materials like a building column or beam, which code would take precedence for the procedure and welder qualifications?

I would think D1.3 as D1.1 is generally limited to materials 1/8" and greater ~ see paragraph 1.2 "Limitations" in D1.1.

I agree

I also agree that D1.3 would be more appropriate, however when welding to a structural member you should also preheat that member when it would be required by D1.1 based on group number and thickness. This should be addressed on the WPS in addition to the D1.3 variables.

Your welders are going to have to qualify to D1.3 "sheet steel to supporting structural member or sheet to sheet". The two codes actually overlap each other. D1.3 limits out at 3/16" (7 ga I think) while D1.1 picks up at 1/8". Personally, I draw the line at 12ga for D1.3, but, thats an individual judgement call. Any help?
