What type of machine is used to do this? We buy lots of this stuff on various lengths at work and would like to explore doing it ourselves to save some money.

Thanks

You left out what kind of finish is required. Theaded what? All thread stock? Pipe?

A Chop saw, Band saw, Hack saw (power), Plasma torch.

Oops Threaded 316 rod. A typical order may be 400 pieces of 1/2" x 6" threaded rod. Tolerance isn't all that critical maybe +/- 1/8".

A screw machine (a kind of automated lathe) would do a fine job of this. Too expensive to buy new for this I think. Perhaps you can find something in an auction.

All the above choices would work, but if you are cutting several of the same length look towards a saw that you can modify the fence (or add to it) in order to have the ability to set repetetive stops.

About a year ago I was in the same boat but needed to cut small tubing. I ended up getting a small benchtop cold saw from Wilton called the Willy 225. It is available through http://mscdirect.com and I was able to easily fabricate an auxillary fence to make repetetive cuts. It has been a fantastic saw.

Good luck,

Kevin

What would be an average run of identical pieces?

I'm not sure what you mean by an average run but what I do would consist of:

16 36" lenths of .313 x .035, 4130
16 32.5" lengths of .313 x .035, 4130
32 12" lengths of .313 x .035, 4130
24 3.5" lengths of .25 x .035, 4130
16 6" lengths of .25 x .035, 4130
16 4" lengths of .375 x .065 DOM
4 Lengths of .375 x .083, 4130

This is a typical run of cutting (3x per week) for some contract brazing that I do for a local bicycle company. I hope that answers your question.
