Does anyone know of a document that shows what tolerances can be expected using manual GMAW. I am being held to +- 1mm as welded. While we fixture parts it is very difficult to meet this requirement even though the vast majority of weldments are single pass fillets using S6 wire on mild steel. Part sizes vary from sheet metal thickness thru 1/2" and length between dimension can be up to 6'.

Open tolerances on welded structures are controlled by the applicable fabrication code of manufacture. Find out the code of manufacture for the subject job and see the references.

For example, DIN 8570 specifies the open tolerances on welded structures for jobs manufactured under DIN specifications.

If you are fabricating this item in large quantities, it would be wise to modify the fixture so that some amount of pre-bending or greater stiffening is imparted to the item during welding. If you can succeed in this with trial and error, you will save rework time straightening the same.

I have done production welding with a tolerance of .060 without difficulty. Some parts had a tolerance of plus .008 minus .000 . Some of these parts were up to 10 feet long and with no machining after welding. Use proper fixturing and welding . You can do it. Also, the customer tells you what they want.

What type of product is this and what is the end use of the product.
