I am overlaying a small area of a die block and am looking for the proper filler metal. The base material is a 4140H and is about 4" in thickness. The area to be built up is about an inch to one and a half inches square. I would prefer to use the GTAW process. Would an ER70S-6 be appropriate and what kind of preheat if any is neccessary?

Thanks,
Chas. Miller

I presume the most important property you need from the deposit would be a minimum hardness of 300 Hv as it would form a part of a die. You will not get this hardness with ER70S-6. You may try ER 410 or ER 430 type stainless filler to achieve this hardness.

Going by the composition of the material and the carbon equivalant, it is difficult to arrive at a safe preheat temperature. However, a preheat of 350 to 400 deg. c should be safe.

GTAW is the preferred method.
