if a welder tests on one inch plate in the vert. post. per d1.1 what is the difference if the welder tests on one inch plate per d1.5?
assuming he passes both tests. is it just the paper work?

One glaring difference is that D1.5 does not allow the use of power tools (ie grinder) for interpass cleaning.

There may be others, but that is a biggie.

To add to chall's response.... D1.1 and D1.5 plate tests are essentially the same, as far as thickness limitations, F groups, size of plates and etc.
D1.5 requires the testing to be witnessed/administered by a qualified individual (not necessarily a CWI, "qualified" could be decided by who gets the 'short straw").

Weld cleaning must be done in the testing position.

Weld beads may not be modified between passes by grinding, filing, chiseling or etc. De-slagging and wire brushing are not a problem.

In D1.5, it used to be that power tools were not allowed but you could use a hand cutting tool, such as a chisel, to cut out a 'grape' or whatever. Not anymore. What you lay down for a bead is what you have to work with.

D1.1 is silent on these items. It is left up to the organization responsible for the welding to review D1.1 and establish test criteria.
