Hey Jeff,

You really haven't provided enough info for a real exact answer. But I'll share some data from Hobart Institute of Welding Technology GMAW Student Guide.

The below parameter are suggested for 3/8 inch thick A38 steel.

The recomendations below are for welds in both vert up and vert down positions. The technique varies between up and down and I'll let others pitch in on that.

1/8th inch root opening
70 degree included bevel angle with a 1/16 inch land (root face)
0.035 ER70S6 solid electrode wire
Straight CO2 Gas\

90-110 amps (120-140 inches per minute)
17 to 20 Volts
Gas Flow rate 15-25 CFH
Stickout 1/4 to 3/8 inch

that is really all i needed to know. the people i work with have no idea how to weld they think that they have to run everything very hot (27-28) and thats .035. on their vertical up they tack all the way up. when i try to weld the RIGHT way they try to change it. i just wanted some other info on heat and wire speed for test plates. thank you
