Dear all
we have a cover casing of compressor and the material is cast iron.one crack created on the cover and we creat a groove on it and drill both end of crack for repair by welding but when we weld it we observe transvers crack on weld metal , we use all cast iron electrode and filler rod such as E-Ni-CI , E-NiCu-7 , ER-NiCu-7 with preheat and without preheat but in all conditions we can`t weld it. thickness is about 1 Cm.
any body can help me for this problem.

best regards

It seems that the part is made of flaked graphite iron and thus it is very difficult to weld a crack free joint. I believe you have tried the use of 99 % Ni electrodes as well as 60% Ni - 40%Fe for the purpose. If welding is of no help and it is not a pressure part you can try metal stitching on the cracked part.
Metal stitching is an alternative method to repair any small shrinkage crack on cast iron parts which cannot be welded effectively. It is a cold joining process by drilling, tapping and plugging in series from one end of the crack to the other. You may get it done in a cast iron foundry(fettling shop ) or a machine shop where they handle cast iron.
