Hello,
I have old WPS for GTAW ( root Deposits 6 mm ) and SMAW deposits weld 10 mm( base thk 16 mm ).and PQR support for this WPS is Acceptable. So can I write new WPS for SMAW only ( root by SMAW) qualified thk to 32 mm by use same PQR to support.

Thanks in advance.

1) The qualified "deposited weld metal" qualified range is 2 times the deposited amount from the Original PQR. If the original PQR deposited thickness is 10 MM, the max would only be 20MM.

2) In some codes, deletion of backing would require requalification. Sec IX by itself lists this as a non-essential variable and therefore you are OK there.
Keep in mind this . A) Some codes of construction address this even though Sec IX lists it as a Non-Essential variable.
B) Welders will have to qualify.

Hope this helps
