The macrosection is examining &/or photographing a polished and etched cross section of the weld at low or no magnification in order to determine the quality of the weld (i.e. no incomplete fusion, or other defects). The microstructural evaluation is looking at the polished and etched cross section at a high magnification to look for micrustructural problems like cabide precipitation or intermetallic formation.
