I'm new to this site and somewhat of a novice welder. More of a hobbyist. Anyways when I am fabricating something out of angle iron or channel and I weld a piece perpindicular to another piece I get the base piece warping due to the heat on one side. How can I eliminate this? Or at least miminize it.

1) Tack it off well
2) Preset the piece where it will warp into place.
3) If the joint is long, backstep the welds.

Or any combination of the above.

Have a good day

What is "backstepping"?

Here is a brief example of the backstepping sequence. http://www.weldinginspectionsvcs.com/misc/backstepsequence.htm

Hope This Helps

Well, I'd just tell Scotty to disengage the warp engines and go sub-light :)

Lincoln Electric publishes many books that address weld distortion control. Their "Procedure Handbook for Arc Welding" has a bit on the subject. Cost is about $20. Check with your welding supply store to see if they have it. If the price is much over $20, I would order it online.
