need an experienced welders guidance on repairing an old IHC tractor cast differential housing....it is open on the top /closed on bottom and has machined holes for axles out the sides. A friend bought this tractor and asked if I could help....not sure & dont want to screw him up.. by doing the wrong thing.....thinking either stick welding w/ nickel rod ...or brazing w/ oxy/acy torch.....its cracked thru the axle openings up thru the sides to the top surface...where the inspection cover bolts on....basically only the bottom of the casting is holding this thing together.

its a very heavy (more than 200#) casting.... wondering about pre/post heating as well. thought first step would be to "v" out the cracks....havent started as yet though...just took apart the other day & cleaned up.

any guidance appreciated

How old of a tractor? I've restored a few tractors and IHC were a common tractor(plenty of parts tractors ) so you maybe able to find a parts tractor to donate what you need instead of trying to repair it.

“THE CAST IRON PROBLEM SOLVER”
Unquestionably the final answer to the most difficult cast iron repair welding. This highly sophisticated
alloy allows repairs that were previously impossible.
IDENTIFICATION: Printed Electrode, TIG Flagged One End
APPLICATION: AC or DC Reverse Polarity
CRONACAST 211 SUPERIOR ADVANTAGES:
• HIGH TENSILE WELDS IN EVERY TYPE OF CAST IRON, INCLUDING GREY AND
MEEHANITE; ALSO PRODUCES EXCELLENT STEEL TO CAST IRON WELDS
• CRONAMIG 211 IS FULLY MACHINABLE AND HAS A HIGH ELONGATION
FACTOR WHICH POSITIVELY PREVENTS CRACKING
• PASS OVER PASS WELDING WITHOUT SLAG REMOVAL BETWEEN PASSES
• ALL POSITION WELDING CAN BE DONE WITH CRONAMIG 211 WITH NO
DISMANTLING OF EQUIPMENT PARTS
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
TENSILE STRENGTH: 70,000 PSI (483 MPa)
BRINELL HARDNESS: 185-240
OPERATING PROCEDURES:
Use AC or DC reverse polarity. Generally, where a narrow, thin
bead is desired a straight polarity application is suggested.
APPLICATIONS:
• GEAR TEETH • PUMP IMPELLERS
• SPROCKETS • CAST IRON TO STEEL
• PUMP HOUSINGS • CYLINDER BLOCKS AND HEADS
• BEARING HOUSINGS • TRANSMISSION CASES
• TURBINES • HYDRAULIC PRESS RAMS

Using Nickel rods is easy. Just don't weld more than 1" and ping like crazy. Allow the weld to cool before moving on to the next 1". If your not sure, practice on some other cast first. There is no cast I won't weld.
