Just curious if anyone has any experience GTA-welding 321 to 310. The attempted weld would be 12-ga SS-310 to 0.250" SS-321, with-out filler metal. Would ER-347 be approporiate for the fully-austenetic 310? Would another filler be more appropriate?

Thanks for your time...

Mitch,

You lost me.

You first state that your attempt is without filler and follow up by asking would 347 filler be correct.

Tell us more.

What type of joint and service conditions?

Ah, my mistake...I had 2 thoughts going and thus started the message with one thought, but changed to the other without proof-reading...

Anyways, originally we were to complete an autogenous weld and my question would have been about any matallurgy concerns between 310 and 321 with-out filler.

Now the 2nd part of the question is, if we were to use a filler, would ER-347 or ER-310 be the more appropriate choice.

We are welding thermocouple sheilds (SS-310) to the external surface of SS-321 heater tubes (the 321 being chosen for it's internal contents, not the external heater environment).

Any insight to both scenario's (with or with-out filler) is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe W.

321 is commonly joined with 347

Here is a link to two cross reference charts that say 308 or 347 are good choices for joining 310 to 321. If your application is going to be high temp than the 347 may be the way to go.
