What does the term inverter mean? How does an inverter welder differ from other types?

Inverters change AC input power into DC and then an electronic (transistors like IGBT or MOSFET) switch switches at frequencies upwards of 50,000 cycles per second. The higher the frequencies permits smaller transformers ie lighter weight, better and faster arc responses compared to 60 cycles (hertz). A transformer rectifier uses 60 hertz ac input power and the arc is 60 hertz arc.
