D1.1-98 says that retesting can take place immediately if two weldments are performed for the retest or one weldment may be performed after a period of instruction or practice. Somewhere I got the idea that if you failed the retest you would have to wait six months before you could test again but I don't find this in the 98 codebook. Did I get this from a previous version, the 2000 version or did I just dream it up on my own?

I don't recall ever seeing a 6 month waiting period for retesting in any D1.1 (at least from 1985 'til 2000). D1.5 doesn't have that requirement either. It sounds like you are remembering another spec (I have not a clue as to what it could be) or maybe you are thinking of the D1.1-2000 Section 4.1.3 Period of Effectiveness. That requires retesting if a person has not used the welding process for more than 6 months. Take a look at it and maybe it will ring a bell?
