Can I use solid meg wire to weld steel nuts onto my cast iron exhaust manifolds or do I need a special wire.

For a temp fix I've done similar repairs but for a good permanent fix, Nickle will be the proper filler material. Finding this material is nearly imposible in rolled wire. Tig rod or stick electrodes are available but very expensive. As I remember about $32 per pound. Lincoln offers Ni99 as does Mckay in stick electrodes.

Good luck,

Stoody sells both the coated version as well as a tubular wire version (can be wlded with either no gas or CO2).

I've done it too. I heat everything red hot, weld it, cool as slowly as possible (buried in wood ashes or kitty litter seems to work).

I 've used E-70 Mig wire to repair manifolds. I also used it to weld a mild steel patch to cast manifold material. Grind clean, preheat and slow cooldown after welding.
Thanks
