What is the welding code you are using?

We are welding to D1.1.

I interprete the D1.1 as "no" to your question. See D1.1:2004, 4.7.3.

Many clients try the argument: "...this material is very similar to that material..." I don't buy it and I'm 99.9% sure AWS does not buy the argument either based upon a letter I have from the former D1.1 chairperson.

Do you have to use D1.1? As I recall, A569 is a sheet steel spec and could be welded under D9.1 or D1.3. What thicknesses are being welded for the A569 and grade 1215?

we are welding 7 gauge A569 to 1215 round ; 1 1/2 dia.
