Hi everyone:

I'm new to everything pertaining to OAW. I'm trying to find out what the puddle should look like when you dip in the rod. Should the metal look kind of like a mirror? How large should it be? Or, is it supposed to be shiney with an indentation like a keyhole? I'm really confused , but I know you guys can help.

Safari. One thing my grandfather always stressed to me was make sure on steel you use a Neutral Flame not oxidizing or carburizing, and watch your puddle, once it is formed it should look pure and clean and float the oxide scum out of the puddle before you add the filler metal. Hope it helps some. Paul

Hey, I noticed a few of your posts about puddles, filler metal, and flame tweaking.

Check out this website, I am pretty new to welding myself. I rented their Oxy video. Its an easy way to watch someone do what you are asking about, an see a good example of the how the puddle should look etc.. its a nice short starter video.

There service was excellent. Can't beat it for 9 bucks..
