We are trying to located what types of companies employ CWI's before pursuing the CWI certification. Person lives in Minnesota (near Minneapolis) and has the ideal background for the certification (HS Diploma and 5+ years of welding experience).
He needs to earn at least $20.00/hour (was making $30+/hour) and we need to determine if there is even a need in the job market right now. Please help if you have any ideas as to where we can start.
Thank you!!
Jamie

Also try www.inspectionjobs.com also, many states and municipalities may have information on this subject.

Nondestructive testing labs, fabrication plants, civil engineering firms involved in construction inspection are some of the type of companies that will hire CWI's. If you want to make $20/hour you will probably have to travel and do contract work. Also NDT certs. such as UT,MT,PT or RT would help. For $30/hour you might shoot towards the nuclear industry.

Jamie; the market is pretty full of CWI's at the moment but there are always new opportunities coming available. In the salary range you're seeking I would strongly urge looking into industrial construction; oil & gas, bridges, power plants, etc., as mentioned by TTONKA.

Try looking in AWS "Jobfind" periodically and also check www.monster.com, www.rigzone.com, www.careerbuilder.com

Good luck! P/S: Be mentally prepared to travel!

Construction materials and testing (CMT) laboratories typically look for an inspector who has both CWI and ICC structural steel/welding certifications. These inspectors are referred to as special inspectors and perform inspection on buildings during the construction phase.

Check the ICC website for job listings at http://www.iccsafe.org/e/listjobs.html for nationwide openings or talk to CMT laboratories in your area if they are currently hiring such people.

In this type of buisness, an individual may have to move to where the work is.
