I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some information concerning stud welding. Is it allowed to weld two studs(one on top of the other) to achieve a desired stud length. For exampl: a 12" stud is required, can to 6" studs be welded together to achieve the required 12"? I cannot find anything in D1.1 that would not allow this. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes you can stack studs if the engineer of record approves it.I have never been told I could not stack studs but it is the EOR decision to make. He/She does have the option to say no.

I agree with QCCWI. We call it piggybacking, and have had it approved in a few emergency situations over the years.

We have done that also, perform the usual testing in your shop per Section 7 of D1.1 and Ok it with the EOR, and you should be good to go.
