Due to a contamination problem I have been prematurely burning out elements. 14 gauge Kanthal APM (powdered metal). Is it feasible to TIG weld these back together? I have two right now and anticipate more. (hazards of Studio Hot-glass work) Item cost is $60. each. Thanks for any input.

What is the chemical composition of this? You might be able to join it, but most likely it will not last very long. Powdered metals are made to obtain special properties and welding almost always impairs these special properties. Since this is a heating element, if you increase the resistance at the weld, you will have a hot spot which will burn up quicker. This is also pretty thin stuff, tough to weld unless you’re really good with TIG. Use a small diameter tungsten and sharpen it well.

Who makes the raw material(not the elements). Maybe they can tell you how to weld it.
Good luck! Let us know how you make out.
Regards.
