i have to rebuild a discharge chute for a chipper and the company requires it to be plated with ar400 steel.what kind of preheat does this need? low hydrogen is accepted for this right?

I'm going by memory now, but I think we generally use 8018-C1, with about 250F preheat.

Usually the material supplier will give you a recommended WPS if you ask.

last time we used ar 400plate mfgr specs called for no pre heat or special prep.this was about one year ago.email your mfgr.and they will be glad to help you.
