I recently reviewed a vender’s welder qualifications and procedure. As I reviewed the welder quals I asked to see a copy of there WPS. They did not have a written WPS on file. All there welder quals had been done by a two local labs. One of which is no longer around. Both reference different wps #. All work is to be preformed per AWS D1.1. It was always my understanding that the welding procedure shall be written and available for review. Also from the lab that is still in operation. Were they reference the WPS# the have B2.1. Isn’t B2.1 a guide to the qualification of welders and procedures? Does anyone have any comments?

You are correct on both. First, AWS B2.1 is the Standard for Welding Procedure and Performance Qualification. Second, if all work is to be performed per D1.1, records of any WPS and welder performance qualifications are to be kept by the fabricator or contractor, and made available to anyone authorized to view them. The fabricator or contractor should have a WPS to support the welder qualification tests, because the tests are performed based on the parameters set forth in the WPS. Anyone who can't provide proper documentation is kind of iffy to me. Don't let the vendor pull a fast one on you. Anyone who has a half a brain and access to a blank form can fill out a WPS. Watch the welders too. I remember a shop who had a tight deadline to meet, and two of their certified welders were out sick one day. The supervisor promptly put two unqualified welders in their place. It just so happened that morning the uniform guy had just dropped off the uniforms for that week. The two guys grabbed shirts that had the names of the absent guys on the front of them, put them on, and began welding. The names on the shirts matched the two certified guys names, but they were busted when their SS numbers didn't match the two names on the certification documents.

Good advice Scott. Sounds kinda like the vendor in question here doesn't really have a clue...

Your correct, the vendor does not have a clue. We are working with them and have put them in contact with a reputable firm to get this resolve quickly and also provide them with some basic training on Welding Procedures and Qualifications.
