Are there any portable instruments to check the agan gas quality at site being used in TIG welding in boiler welding applications? What are the perameters to be checked/allowble values. Sometimes we are getting more porosity defects which could be due to poor argan gas quality. could someone advise to solve the problem?
Do a Google, Yahoo or any other search by typing in: "portable oxygen analyzer"... You should find many hits to a variety of companies that manufacture these... Hope this helps!!!
Hello C.S.RAO, You can get a argon gas analyzer to check your argon (Gow-Mac makes one) or you can do what I have done in the past, that is to ask the people that supply your gas to check it for you. They can come on site and check it. I recently asked our gas supplier to check our argon because we were having some porosity problems and they came out and checked about 100 high pressure bottles and 25 liquid duer bottles, and found nothing wrong. Some other things you could have your welders check. 1. Check for leaks in their argon hoses. Have them turn their argon on at the torch, then turn it off and watch the ball drop in the flow meter. If it does not drop immediately and just hangs there then you are sucking air some where. 2. Make sure there gas flow to the TIG torch is not to high. 3. If they are welding in areas with a breeze then use a Gas lens. 4. If it is boiler tubes make sure you are plugging the tubes at both ends. You can get air drafts. Hope that helps Jim
