I am sure this has been covered a million times, but not for me. I am going to buy a mig welder for body work and light repair. I don’t do any of this as a professional, just for personal and farm use. I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars, but don’t want a piece of junk either. So, which models of either miller or Lincoln should I be looking at?

I have a 220 volt Hobart that is 20 years old and has never failed. If I needed to buy a new one today, I would get the Miller 251 or at the minumum, the 210. Lincoln makes fine products but Miller service is the best.

a 251 is about $2000. at that price i could probably hire someone to fix my stuff. what about a 175?

I would say look into the max thickness you plan to work with. I own a mm210 and it will handle any motorsport or chassis welding, as well as body panels. I believe it is possibly more than you may need. I have seen a new model that will run on 120v as well as 230v it is called DVI. Very nice machine. Also a mm135 will do sheetmetal nicely with .023 or .025 wire, and this is the economy starter. Don't Don't Don't buy a cheap no name model.

Peace,
