hi all.
can't seem to find where it states the material thickness on pre-qualified gmaw non-tubular fillet welds in 1.1.thanking you in advance for any help.

GMAW-short circuiting mode is not prequalified.

Good question:

Personally I would interperate D1.1 : Since IF you were to weld a coupon and qualify a fillet test - the range of qualified thickness's would be 1/8" to unlimited....I would assume then that a pre-qualified procedure would have the same range of qualification, 1/8" to unlimited.

(As noted by MBSims assuming your GMAW process is a pre-qualified type.)

Okay, assuming you are not talking about short-circuiting, try looking at Figure 3.3 and look for joint designations with a "T" in them; for example, BTC-P4-GF (page 76 of the 2004 edition), or BTC-P10-GF (page 80). Do these examples help?

Those examples are prequalified partial penetration tee joints, not fillet welds.

Good point. That being said, and finding nothing to the contrary, perhaps it is safest to assume that D1.1 is simply mute on the base metal thickness permitted for pre-qualified fillets? One can't argue with your discussion with regard to 1/8" to max.

3.1 Scope, states in part that all prequalified WPS's shall be written. In order for a WPS to be prequalified, conformance with all the applicable requirements of Section 3 shall be required. It goes on to state that for convenience, Annex H lists provisions to be included in a prequalified WPS.
These provisions are shown in Annex H as a list of subsections that the prequalified WPS must address. One provision is 1.2 Limitations, which states that when metals thinner than 1/8" thick are to be welded, the requirements of D1.3 apply. Since there is a minimum thickness indicated, but no maximum thickness indicated, I interpret this to mean that 1/8" through unlimited thickness base metals are prequalified for fillets (excluding fillets made by GMAW-S), provided the criteria of Table 3.1 is met. Also, as Bill Mc stated, the welder qualification tests determine the qualified thickness range, which is 1/8 to unlimited, regardless of the fillet test option (Table 4.10).

Excellent Scott! Thank you! Nicely summed up!

continuing this subject, figure 4.36 shows the welder qualification test plate as being 1/2" material.so a pre-qual fillet is any thickness greater than 1/8" but the welder qualification test must be on 1/2"?thanks in advance.

The 1/2 inch thickness shown in Figure 4.36 is minimum, meaning it could be more. But do not forget that a welder qualified on plate for 3G and 4G positions is qualified to weld fillets on plate in all 4 positions. Table 4.9

Indeed as pointed out by others in this thread, the prequalified WPS(welding procedure specification) for fillet welds/plate can be developed for thicknesses 1/8 in and greater.
